O Janus Pater, Janus guardiano, divus bicipite biforme,

Dell’autore di questo inno, Septimius Serenus, non sappiamo praticamente nulla, si pensa che sia stato attivo nel III sec. aev. e che scrisse un libro di Opusculu Ruralia in una varietà di metri, a volte molto ricercati, introdotti da lui stesso. La sua opera mostra l’influenza del poeta del I sec. aev. Laevius.
Le sue opere dovevano essere molto popolari nell’età tardo imperiale e sopravvissero almeno fino al IX sec. quando le troviamo nel catalogo della biblioteca dell’abbazia di Bobbio. Alcuni lo identificano con l’erudito Serenus Sammonicus che scrisse un’opera antiquaria in 5 libri, chiamata Res reconditae, dedicata probabilmente a Settimio Severo e Caracalla, il quale ne ordinò l’omicidio nel 212 aev
We know practically nothing about Septimius Serenus, the author of this hymn. It is thought to have been active in the third century BCE. He wrote Opusculu Ruralia in a variety of meters, sometimes very recherché, introduced by himself. His work shows the influence of the 1st century BCE poet Laevius.
His works were very popular in the late imperial age and survived until at least the IX century, when we find them in the catalog of the Bobbio Abbey library.
Someone identifies him with the scholar Serenus Sammonicus, who wrote an antiquarian work, Res Reconditae, in 5 books addressed to probably Septimius Severus and Caracalla, who ordered to kill him in 212 BCE.
